Does Medicare or Oregon Health Plan Cover Orthopedic Support Supplies? A Springfield-Area Patient Guide for 2026

Laurie King • October 22, 2026

This guide explains what Springfield, OR, area patients need to know about insurance coverage for orthopedic support supplies in 2026, covering both Medicare and Oregon Health Plan rules. Understanding the basics upfront can save time and prevent unexpected bills.

How Medicare Part B Covers Orthopedic Support Supplies

Orthopedic braces are classified as durable medical equipment (DME) and covered by Medicare Part B when prescribed by a healthcare provider for a medical reason. Items like knee braces, back supports, wrist braces, and ankle-foot orthoses may qualify, provided the brace is medically necessary and is a rigid or semi-rigid device designed to support a weak or deformed body part or restrict motion in a diseased or injured area.

A notable policy update took effect in early 2026. Revisions to the Local Coverage Determination (LCD), effective January 25, 2026, expanded covered knee orthoses to include braces designed for medial or lateral tibiofemoral osteoarthritis with varus or valgus adjustment. If you have knee arthritis, this change may open up coverage options you did not have before.

What Documentation Do You Typically Need?

Getting orthopedic support supplies covered requires preparation from both your doctor and your supplier:

  •  A written prescription from a licensed physician or qualified provider.
  • Medical records documenting your diagnosis, symptoms, and functional limitations.
  • A face-to-face encounter with your doctor may be required before Medicare approves certain orthotic devices.
  • The brace must be obtained from a Medicare-enrolled supplier; devices from non-enrolled suppliers will not be reimbursed.

Medicare requires prior authorization for many lumbar back braces and knee braces. The supplier submits documentation to Medicare before billing to confirm medical necessity. Ask your supplier whether they accept Medicare assignment, which limits what you owe out of pocket.

Does Oregon Health Plan Cover Orthopedic Braces?

Oregon Health Plan covers medically necessary orthopedic support supplies for eligible members. Covered devices include leg, arm, back, and neck braces, as well as artificial limbs and eyes, including replacements required by a change in the patient's physical condition.

Oregon expanded its orthotic coverage rules effective January 1, 2026. Permanent Administrative Order ID 9-2025, approved November 17, 2025, establishes a list of prosthetic and orthotic devices that must be covered under Oregon law, including any device with a CMS HCPCS Level II L-code and additional medically necessary devices that best meet an insured's needs for physical activities and whole-body health.

For Lane County residents, OHP coverage is now coordinated through Trillium Community Health Plan. PacificSource Community Solutions exited Lane County as of February 2026, with Trillium absorbing approximately 92,000 members across Lane, western Linn, and western Douglas counties. If you are unsure who your current CCO is, call OHP at 1-800-699-9075.

Coverage under OHP requires a medical necessity determination. Items that are primarily for personal comfort, convenience, or athletic performance typically do not qualify.

What Is Not Covered Under Either Plan?

Both Medicare and OHP exclude soft comfort sleeves, non-medical shoe inserts, and athletic braces used for sports performance or injury prevention in an otherwise uninjured body part. Your diagnosis and your provider's documentation determine eligibility, not the product itself.

  • Does Medicare Cover Custom-Fitted Orthopedic Braces?

Medicare Part B covers both custom-made and off-the-shelf braces under the durable medical equipment benefit, provided they meet medical necessity criteria and are supported by a valid physician order.

  • Can I Get Coverage If I Have Both Medicare and OHP?

If you qualify for both programs, you are a "dual eligible" member. Medicare is typically the primary payer, and OHP may cover remaining costs such as copays or deductibles. Contact your CCO or Medicare plan to confirm how coordination of benefits applies to your situation.

  • What Should I Bring When Visiting a Local Orthopedic Supply Provider?

Bring your Medicare and OHP insurance cards, your physician's written order or prescription, and recent medical records documenting your condition. Having this paperwork ready helps your supplier begin the authorization process without delay.

  • How Do Springfield-Area Patients Access Orthopedic Support Supplies Through Insurance?

Patients in Springfield, OR, and the wider Eugene metro area can visit a local Medicare-enrolled DME supplier who handles billing directly with Medicare and OHP. The supplier works with your doctor's office to gather documentation, submit prior authorization if needed, and ensure you receive the right product with minimal out-of-pocket costs.
